Kandy is a central Sri Lankan city laid on a beautiful plateau covered by mountains, lakes, and religious temples. These mountains are home to huge tea plantations as well as biodiverse dense rainforests which are supported by the heavy rainfall that the country receives. At the city's heart is situated the picturesque Kandy Lake (also called Bogambara Lake), widely popular among tourists for strolling. Not only that but it is also famous for its numerous sacred Buddhist temples, including the popular shrine called Temple of the Tooth (or Sri Dalada Maligawa).

The Royal Botanical Garden housed by Kandy is one of the most happening places to visit with over 4000+ different species to exhibit. With an entry fee of around 10 USD, the place is quite serene and a must-visit. We suggest planning a full-day picnic with your family with a nice wine basket and some towels to throw over the grass to sit quietly in this peaceful environment.

A Day’s Trip to Sigiriya

If you have an extra day at hand, make sure to add this to your “to-do” list which is a 3-hour long journey to Sigiriya which houses the famous Lion Rock, a UNESCO site. The place is only a few hours’ drive from Kandy with great road-trip views. It is also a good place to catch a panoramic sunrise. If you are visiting during the peak tourist months, you can also skip the long crowd at Sigiriya and instead visit Pidurangala which offers the same panoramic views.

Temple of Tooth, Kandy

Also known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa - a stunning Buddhist Temple, it is a must-do activity if you’re in Kandy. It features a gorgeous golden ceiling located at the heart of the city. Early morning trips to the temple are the best to beat the crowd and get a clear view of the legendary Buddhist tooth relic, covered in jewels. This place is worth visiting not only for its Buddhist legacy but also for its gorgeous interiors. Best Time to Visit

The weather in Kandy is tolerable and pleasant throughout the year so you can pick a season that you want to experience. The summers last from January to April and have scanty rainfall and pleasant temperatures of 18-28C that make it ideal for adventure sports. The short monsoon season from May to September is best for a couples' getaway and meditation tours owing to the limited crowd and the romantic and calm weather. The maha monsoon season lasts from October to December and receives heavy rainfall. Having said that, you might think it is a bad time to visit, but most tourists plan their outings during this period as crowds are the least and you get to explore a completely different aura of the island with the beautiful tropical rainforests showing their true colors during the monsoons.

How To Reach Rishikesh

You can reach Rishikesh by bus, train, and air.

By bus route: There are a lot of buses that travel from Colombo to Kandy every day.

By train: The Inter-city Express is a pretty cheap option to travel to Kandy which connects Kandy to Baluda and Colombo. The journey is truly mesmerizing with a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s less-known scenic beauty. Plus, you can reserve a second-class seat which has other luxury facilities like saloons. The third-class coach runs unreservedly.

By air: The Bandaranaike International Airport of Colombo is the closest to Kandy and travelers can take a 4-hours road trip from there to Kandy. This is the major airport near Kandy which connects to all other major Asian cities and also metro cities of India.

By Road: You can book taxis or cabs to travel to Kandy from Colombo or other major cities. Minivans are also available if you are traveling with a group. Choosing this option gets a bit more expensive than public transportation but is comfortable and safer. To explore the city of Kandy, renting a two-wheeler or booking a tuk-tuk are the best options.

Things To Keep in Mind

Now that you are ready to pack your things, there are a few things to keep in mind when confirming your visits as a part of your Sri Lanka travel guide:

  • Some of the train routes in Kandy are super popular and tickets get sold out as early as 30-40 days. So plan your trip well in advance and book tickets ahead of time. This is even more true for the Kandy-Ella route.
  • Booking the right train class is equally important. The 1st Class Observation Car is better for travelers as it gives a wide view of the scenery when compared to the 1st Class Car (different from the former). The best would be a reserved 2nd Class seat as you can also open the windows. The unreserved 2nd and 3rd-class car might pose an issue as you might not get a seat and have to stand.
  • Sri Lanka popularly has Type G, Type D, or Type M kinds of electrical outlets. Hence, carry the right kind of power adapters to charge your devices. The electrical frequency here is 50Hz while the standard voltage is 230V.
  • It is illegal to carry remuneration of more than 5000 LKR inside or outside of the country. So, if you have an excessive amount of LKR still left in your bag, you must either spend it or exchange it for another currency before leaving the country. You can do this at the exchange centers at the airport.
  • It is better to rent a mini pocket wifi device for uniform connectivity throughout the country as internet connectivity is of paramount importance while traveling.
  • Although Sri Lanka is a comparatively safer place to visit, we still recommend taking some basic precautions like not walking at night (just like any other place).
  • Walking is sufficient to explore the city of Kandy and you can cover all major tourist spots better by walking.
  • But you could also book a tuk-tuk to explore the city even better.
  • Don’t forget your travel insurance.
  • It is best not to visit an Elephant Orphanage as it is more of an entertainment business than a place to genuinely take care of the animals.
  • Avoid buying tickets from anyone near Kandy Lake. Unfortunately, this is one of the very few places in Sri Lanka where fraudsters are always peeping through the corners.
