While practising yoga, many people think of a landscape, breathwork, meditative states, and a path that leads to inner peace. However, to understand the origin of yoga, we must seek beyond modern trends and travel to the roots of the practice - Rishikesh, India, at the base of the Himalayas. Rishikesh has been the magnetic centre for sages, mystics, and spiritual seekers around the world.
The name Rishikesh comes from the Sanskrit word Hrishikesha, meaning “Lord of the Senses,” a name associated with Lord Vishnu. Surrounded by nature and blessed by the sacred Ganga, Rishikesh offers an ideal environment for introspection, learning, and self-purification.
Rishikesh's origin is rooted in India's ancient spiritual legacy, dating back to the Vedic period, approximately 5,000 years ago.
Blessed by the sacred flow of the Ganga, Rishikesh has long served as a natural sanctuary for tapasya (austerity), dhyana (meditation), and moksha (liberation). It is not only renowned for its presence in myths and legends but is also revered in the Vedas, Puranas, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. These ancient scriptures describe Rishikesh as a divine land chosen by gods and sages for spiritual evolution.
This vast history of yoga in Rishikesh is as ancient as the Himalayas themselves. The town holds a place in the Vedic scriptures, the Upanishads, and the Puranic texts, where it is described as a Tirtha, a known crossing point. Philosophers like Rishi Vashistha, Rishi Bharadwaja, and Lakshmana are said to have come here for meditation. This spiritual legacy has been passed down through the foundation of Rishikesh's enduring connection to yoga.
While empires have risen and fallen, the divine vibration of Rishikesh continues to resonate quietly, untouched yet fully awake.
Although the seed of yoga in Rishikesh was planted long ago, its modern development began in the early 20th century. During the 1900s, Rishikesh was the town where sadhus and saints sought isolation in the Himalayas. As India entered the post-colonial era, a renewed interest in spirituality inspired visionaries and teachers to establish centers of learning across Rishikesh. Some idealists and spiritual leaders began founding ashrams in the town.
Many ashrams were established in Rishikesh. Among the most influential were the Sivananda Ashram of The Divine Life Society (founded in 1936), Parmarth Niketan, and Yoga Niketan. These ashrams offered yoga courses, attracting not only Indians but also seekers from across the world.
The 1960s marked a turning point when Rishikesh gained global recognition for its ancient wisdom. In 1968, The Beatles famously visited Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram to study Transcendental Meditation, an event that introduced millions to the spiritual heritage of Rishikesh and inspired some of their most iconic songs.
Today, Rishikesh is not only a blessed town, but it is also the centre of global yoga culture. Every year, thousands of students travel here to complete yoga teacher training courses, spiritual workshops, and wellness programs. From traditional Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga to modern practices like Vinyasa Flow and Kundalini Flow, Rishikesh offers it all. These offerings allow students of all backgrounds to explore yoga in its truest form.
Parmarth Niketan Ashram organizes the most celebrated yoga events, including the world-famous International Yoga Festival. Guests from around the world gather to experience Yoga sessions, devotional Kirtans, Vedic rituals, and Ayurvedic healing led by renowned teachers and spiritual masters. This harmony of ancient wisdom and global participation truly defines modern Rishikesh as a living embodiment of yoga’s universal spirit.
"Rishikesh has been the magnetic centre for sages, mystics and spiritual seekers around the world."
It is a sacred city in India, the cradle of Yoga and the epicentre of meditation. Sages, saints, yogis and pilgrims from all over the world coexist in it.
Surrounded by the nature of the Himalayas and the purity that emanates from the mother Ganga River, the spirituality of this town is felt from the first moment. Rishikesh is the perfect refuge for those who want to get started or deepen your understanding of the yogic teachings.
