What Is the Muladhara Chakra?
The Muladhara, or Root Chakra, is the first of the seven main chakras and can be traced back to early yogic and tantric practices. The word Muladhara is from the Sanskrit words “mūla” meaning root, and “adhara”, meaning support or base. As you can see from the name and definition, it is the base of your energy body – it connects you to the earth, grounds your energy, and supports feelings of safety and survival.
Essential Aspects of the Muladhara Chakra

Knowing the key elements of this chakra will help us align with its energy:
Location: Base of spine, located between the anus/free way and the genitals
Element: Earth
Colour: Red
Symbol: a four-petal lotus
Related to: Physical survival
When Balanced: If the root chakra is balanced, you have a good feeling of safety, stability, confidence, you are grounded, emotionally resilient, and you are present in the moment.
When Imbalanced: An imbalanced or blocked Muladhara Chakra may show up as: Mental/Emotional Symptoms: anxiety, fear, insecurity, restlessness Physical symptoms: lower back spasm, heaviness/fatigue in legs, digestive issues or symptoms, or pain in legs or feet.
The Root Element: Connecting to Earth Energy
The natural energy of the Muladhara Chakra is the Earth element. This grounding force anchors us to our physical, material world and sustains our most basic needs. Just as a tree finds its strength through its root system, we find emotional and physical grounding and stability. Grounding yourself alone in nature, walking barefoot on soil, even grounding through certain yoga poses such as Mountain Pose (Tadasana) can help you reconnect to your own earth energy as a stabilising force.
Common Signs of Blocked Muladhara Energy
There are numerous signs that you may have a blocked or underactive root chakra, including:
1. Persistent anxiety or fear with no clear reason
2. Feeling disconnected in your body and from your surroundings
3. Instability in finances or an unhealthy attachment to material items
4. Chronic lower back soreness or other immune-related dysfunctions
5. Lack of motivation or drive
These signs indicate a need to rebalance and nurture the root chakra.
How to Activate or Balance the Muladhara Chakra

Stabilising the Muladhara Chakra is key to having a solid foundation for your physical world and emotional life. When the root chakra is stabilised, feelings of security, confidence, and groundedness are present. Here are some strong and practical ways to open and heal this chakra:
1. Yoga & Physical Movement

Movement is such a great way to awaken the root chakra, especially if you are practising yoga that is lower-body focused to create groundedness.
1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Establishes a firm connection with the earth and improves posture and stability when done properly.
2. Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I): Builds strength in our legs and creates a sense of empowerment and support.
3. Garland Pose (Malasana): Opens the hips and draws the hip energy downward to support grounding.
4. Child’s Pose (Balasana): Promotes rest and surrender while providing connection to the earth.
When you practice any of these postures with intentional, deep breathing regularly, your grounding will be emphasised, and the base of your spine will have awareness.
2. Sound Healing & Mantra Chanting

The seed sound for the Muladhara Chakra is “LAM” (pronounced lum). We chant this sound to help eliminate energetic blockages and attune the frequency of the root chakra.
1. Find a quiet place to sit comfortably.
2. Bring your awareness down to the base of your spine.
3. At your own pace, chant “LAM” out loud or silently for a few minutes.
4. Feel the sound connecting in the body – your lower spine and pelvic region, most notably – forming resonance.
Optionally, you could listen to healing frequencies for the root chakra, such as 396 Hz, which reportedly liberates us from fear and encourages emotional safety.
3. Colour Therapy

The colour of the root chakra is red, indicating energy, vitality, and the life force.
1. Wear red clothing or accessories.
2. Include red in your decor (cushions, candles, art)
2. Meditate (or even just visualise) a glowing red ball of energy at the base of your spine.
4. Using red physically may help to put energy around a chakra to help stimulate your energy while stimulating an awakening.
4. Grounding Through Nature

The root chakra is connected to the earth element, so spending time in nature is the easiest way to become balanced again naturally.
1. Go outside, take your shoes off, and feel natural surfaces, such as grass, soil, or sand (earthing).
2. Sit under a tree, spend time in and tend to a garden, or simply hang out in an outdoor green space.
3. All of your senses are engaged, What do you hear in nature? What do your feet feel? What do you breathe in?
4. If you are consistently connected to the earth, you will be rooted, calm, and feel secure.
5. Meditation & Visualization

Mindful meditation is an extremely powerful resource for chakra healing.
1. Sit in a comfortable position and align your spine.
2. Close your eyes and breathe deeply, bringing your focus to the base of your spine.
3. Imagine a bright red wheel or lotus flower that is spinning or rotating in this area.
4. As you inhale, picture red energy flowing into your body. As you exhale, envision fear and tension leaving your body.
Practice this meditation for 10-15 minutes every day until it becomes a solid habit of grounding your meditation practice.
6. Affirmations

Positive affirmations rewire the subconscious and strengthen feelings of emotional safety. You can repeat them out loud or silently as you meditate.
“I am safe and secure.”
“I trust the process of life.”
“I am grounded and settled.”
“I have everything I need to survive and flourish in life.”
You can write them in a journal, verbally repeat them as you move through your morning routine, and/or place them somewhere in your room.
7. Nutrition & Root Chakra Foods

Your energetic body is also influenced by what you eat. Grounding foods with rich nutrients help nourish the Muladhara Chakra.
1. Root vegetables: Carrots, beets, potatoes, radishes, onions
2. Proteins: Eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts
3. Red foods: tomatoes, strawberries, apples, pomegranates.
4. Whole grains: brown rice, oats, quinoa.
Mindfully eating and choosing whole and nourishing foods support a stable energy foundation.
8. Aromatherapy

Essential oils that have grounding and earthy qualities may help support balance within the root chakra, especially when used in diffusers, baths, or during meditation.
Patchouli: deeply calming and grounding oil.
Cedarwood: grounding oil that invites a sense of safety and stability.
Sandalwood: grounding oil that clears energy and calms the mind.
Vetiver: often called the “oil of tranquility,” it is especially grounding to ease anxiety and stress.
You can apply oils to the base of your spine (diluted with carrier oil), soles of feet, or to your wrists.
9. Crystal Healing

Crystals embody specific vibrational energy that is great to align and activate certain chakras. For the Muladhara Chakra, you can use grounding stones like:
Red Jasper: Grounds and promotes stability, courage, and emotional resilience
Hematite: Absorbs negative energy and enhances focus
Black Tourmaline: A powerful protector grounding source
Smoky Quartz: Dismisses fear up to and including depression
Meditate with them; hold them in your pocket; store them under a pillow or under a yoga mat.
Conclusion
The Muladhara Chakra is the energy base of the body, facilitating all facets of being from physical survival to emotional existence. Understanding its importance along with engaging activities can strengthen its energy, and in turn, be a source for all Chakras and relevant aspects of life to flourish.
